Having a droid x extended battery installed in a Motorola Droid X phone has been claimed by a lot of users to increase the phone's battery life by as much has 20+%.
Extended batteries do have more capacity that the originals that were installed in the Droid X. In my opinion, these higher capacity batteries should have come with the phones in the first place, but that's my opinion.
Along with the higher capacity extended battery, you also get a replacement battery door, which is ever so slightly (about 1mm) thicker. The new battery is a tad larger, thus the new door accommodates this. you You can use the original cover, but it puts more pressure on the battery compartment and the touch screen and could very well cause problems eventually. So, I'd suggest using the replacement door along with your Droid X extended battery.
According to Verizon's website, they offer the droid x extended battery (1930 mAh Lithium Ion) for $49.99. You could probably shop around and find a better deal if you wish to pay less.
There are also aftermarket versions such as the 2300 mAh and 2900 mAh extended battery and back cover for Droid X.

Droid X Extended Battery Charging Tips
It is recommended to allow your battery to die out completely (run it until it shuts down), then recharge. Do this a couple of times (totally run down and recharge, not necessarily one time right after another). This process will calibrate the battery meter and give you better output and longer overall battery life. Some people claim that charging with a wall charger is the best way to go intially, opposed to a car charger.
If you use your Motorola Droid X the way most users do, you do a lot of talking, texting, wi-fi, and 3G internet browsing. And then there's Facebook, Google Maps, and all the apps you use on a daily basis. Start that new battery out right in order to get the best usage from it.
Prolong Droid X Extended Battery Life
First, you should know that enabling wi-fi, gps, or bluetooth will drain your battery in a hurry. Enable (turn on) these functions only when you need them.
Check you display settings. For your screen brightness, the dimmer the better.
Facebook, Twitter and other widgets that constantly run can be a big drain on your battery.
Check the apps you normally use. Some apps put a hurt on your battery in a hurry. You might even look into using an app killer.
